Urodziła się w St. Louis w Missouri. W 1965 roku ukończyła filologię klasyczną. Debiutowała w 1976 powieścią Brama Ivrel. Obecnie mieszka w Spokane, Waszyngton z pisarką Jane Fancher. Jest siostrą artysty Davida A. Cherryego.
